Detailed information about the Zermatt Matterhorn Gornergrat Experience
From Grächen, you can travel in comfort by post bus to the train station in St. Niklaus, from where the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway takes you on a breathtaking 18 km journey through the most beautiful parts of the Swiss Alps.
The valley station of the Gornergrat Railway is located directly opposite Zermatt station and this cogwheel railroad allows you to enjoy the picturesque Alpine landscape, with the Matterhorn spectacularly in view on the left!
On the Gornergrat you have a sweeping view over 29 four-thousand-meter peaks and another highlight is the famous Monte Rosa massif with the highest peak in Switzerland – the Dufourspitze at 4634 m above sea level.
The best way to do this is to walk up to the viewpoint behind the Kulmhotel in just 5 minutes. It’s also worth taking a look down: the second largest glacier in the Swiss Alps, the Gorner Glacier, lies at your feet.
Hiking tip: Riffelsee
Lake Riffelsee is an absolute highlight during your visit to the Matterhorn in Zermatt. The reflection of the Matterhorn in the clear lake makes for a great photo opportunity. For the hike, first take the cog railroad one stop down to Rotenboden. From here, the easy hike takes you past the Riffelsee lake to Riffelberg in one hour (3 km). Back in Zermatt
There are numerous other experiences waiting to be discovered in Zermatt. An insider tip is the picturesque hamlet of “Winkelmatten”. Directly opposite the chapel, you can take a seat on the terrace of the cozy restaurant and admire the breathtaking backdrop of the Matterhorn. A visit to the Matterhorn Museum is also worthwhile. The Matterhorn Museum – Zermatlantis sheds light on the development of Zermatt, including the triumphs and tragedies surrounding the first ascent of the Matterhorn. Visitors are immersed in the mountain world of past centuries and experience how the inhabitants of Zermatt lived in the 19th century. They shudder at the sight of the broken rope from the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, in which four out of seven climbers lost their lives. They also marvel at “Theo”, the 16th century “mercenary” who failed to make the crossing over the Theodul Pass.
A special attraction is the special exhibition “125 Years of Fascination Gornergrat Bahn”, which can be seen from July 1, 2023 to summer 2024. This exhibition takes visitors on an exciting journey into the past of the Gornergrat Bahn. Numerous historical exhibits provide an insight into the changes of the past 125 years.
